How to Choose the Perfect Vinyl Decal for Your Car or Truck

Your vehicle is one of the easiest ways to show off your personality, your interests, your business, or a cause that means something to you. A well-designed vinyl decal can completely change the appearance of a car or truck without the cost and permanence of a full vehicle wrap.

But before ordering a decal, there are a few things you should consider — especially size, color, placement, and design.

At USAVinyls, we create custom die-cut vinyl decals for vehicles, windows, walls, trucks, cars, RVs, boats, and more. Our decals are made to order, so choosing the right combination of size and color can make a huge difference in the finished look.

1. Start With Where You Want to Put Your Decal

The first question isn't necessarily, "What decal do I want?"

It's:

"Where do I want to put it?"

Different areas of a vehicle call for different decal sizes and shapes.

Popular locations include:

  • Car and truck doors
  • Rear windows
  • Side windows
  • Quarter panels
  • Tailgates
  • Truck beds
  • Hoods
  • Side panels
  • Windshields
  • Toolboxes and other smooth surfaces

For example, a long, horizontal design can look fantastic running along the side of a truck, while a more compact design may work better on a rear window or door.

Some of our larger vehicle graphics are specifically designed for doors, quarter panels, and other large smooth areas.

Measure the Area — But Don't Stop There

One of the most common mistakes when ordering a custom decal is measuring the entire area and assuming the decal should be that size.

If your truck door measures 40" wide × 30" high, that doesn't necessarily mean you want a 40" × 30" decal.

Instead, think about the finished size you actually want.

For example:

Door: 40" × 30"
Desired decal: approximately 30" × 10"

This gives the decal room around it and usually produces a much cleaner appearance.

If you're unsure what size would look best, we're always happy to help you think through the proportions.

2. Choose a Color That Contrasts With Your Vehicle

Color can make or break a decal.

A beautiful design can become difficult to see if the vinyl color is too close to the color of the vehicle underneath it.

For example:

White vinyl on a black truck creates a strong, dramatic contrast.

Black vinyl on a white vehicle produces the opposite effect.

For tinted rear windows, lighter colors such as white, silver, yellow, or other bright colors can really stand out. Darker colors often work especially well on lighter paint colors and interior walls.

Many USAVinyls designs are available in a variety of colors, including black, white, red, pink, purple, silver, gold, yellow, green, orange and more.

The goal is simple:

Make sure your design can be seen from a distance.

3. Think About the Shape of Your Design

Not every decal needs to be a rectangle.

That's one of the advantages of die-cut vinyl.

Our decals are cut around the actual artwork, rather than leaving a large square or rectangular background around the design. This means the vehicle's paint, glass, or wall shows through the open portions of the artwork.

The result is a much cleaner appearance.

Instead of:

[ large rectangular sticker ]

you get:

[ your actual design ]

This works especially well for:

  • Animals
  • Tribal graphics
  • Skulls
  • Horror designs
  • Flames
  • Logos
  • Names
  • Quotes
  • Custom lettering
  • Automotive graphics

4. Consider How the Decal Will Look From a Distance

Here's something that is easy to overlook:

A decal doesn't have to look huge up close to be highly visible from across a parking lot.

If your design contains lots of tiny details, making it slightly larger may help.

Likewise, if your decal contains words, fewer words and larger lettering will generally be easier to read while your vehicle is moving or when someone is several feet away.

Our custom text decals are designed with readability in mind, and we recommend considering the number of words and the size of the lettering when choosing a finished decal size.

If you're advertising a business, this becomes even more important.

Your goal isn't simply to decorate your vehicle.

Your goal is to get noticed.

5. Think About What You Want Your Vehicle to Say About You

This might be the most important part.

Your vehicle can say a lot about you before you ever say a word.

Maybe you're looking for:

Something Tough

Large animals, skulls, aggressive graphics, flames, and bold lettering can give a truck a completely different personality.

Something Fun

Funny sayings, colorful graphics, and unusual designs can make your vehicle stand out.

Something Personal

Names, family graphics, memorial decals, hobbies, favorite quotes, and personalized designs can make your vehicle uniquely yours.

Something Meaningful

Our organ donation collection is particularly important to us because organ donation is part of the story behind USAVinyls. The shop includes a large collection of organ donation awareness designs intended to help keep that conversation going.

Sometimes a small decal can carry a very big message.

6. Don't Be Afraid to Ask About Custom Designs

Sometimes you search through hundreds of decals and still can't find exactly what you're imagining.

Maybe you want:

  • A particular animal
  • A specific font
  • Custom lettering
  • A combination of two designs
  • A particular size
  • A mirrored version for the opposite side of a vehicle
  • A design modified to fit a particular area
  • Something completely different from what's already in our shop

That's where a custom request can make sense.

USAVinyls offers custom text decals and also welcomes custom size and color requests on applicable designs.

If you have an idea but aren't sure whether it can be turned into a vinyl decal, ask us.

Sometimes the best designs start with a simple question:

"Can you make this into a decal?"

7. Remember: Vinyl Is More Than Just Decoration

A good vinyl decal can be surprisingly versatile.

Depending on the design and application, vinyl decals can be used on:

Vehicles:
Cars, trucks, SUVs, Jeeps, RVs and more.

Glass:
Rear windows and other smooth glass surfaces.

Home:
Smooth walls, doors and other appropriate surfaces.

Business:
Vehicle advertising, business names, logos and promotional graphics.

USAVinyls decals are designed for real-world use, with weather-resistant vinyl suitable for outdoor applications. Our decals are precision cut and made to order.

8. A Few Questions to Ask Before Ordering

Before purchasing your next decal, take a minute to answer these questions:

Where will I put it?

How large do I want the finished decal to be?

What color will stand out against the surface?

Will I be able to read or recognize the design from a distance?

Do I want a simple graphic or something highly detailed?

Does the design need to face a particular direction?

Do I need one decal or a mirrored pair for both sides of my vehicle?

Answering these questions beforehand can save you time — and can help make sure you love the finished result.
